eBay Sell through rates decrease and listings increase

I recently read in one of the many newsletters that I subscribe to that eBay sell through rates have dropped due to the new fixed price listing specials and length. While the number do show a decline in sell through, you have to look at this realistically.
When eBay announced the addition of Fixed Price 30 day listings as well as the 35 cent listing fees, the total number of listings shot up. Everyone was taking advantage of it. So, yes, your sell through rate will more than likely descrease as the number of bad listings go up.
eBay probably more than cover their expenses on this marketing tactic as every seller switched to the FP30 format. Looking at the charts on MedVed you can see how the number of listings dramatically increased. The numbers of listings sold via BIN dropped because now most listings are selling through fixed price.
More Competition for Getting Noticed
It stands to reason that the more listings, the more competition there will be to get noticed on eBay. You’ll definitely need to begin some off eBay Marketing as well as improving your listing titles and descriptions. I cover several off eBay marketing strategies in the Top Seller Coaching series that have helped my clients over the years. It’s interesting to see that many have been mostly unaffected by the increase in eBay listings. I have to assume that is due to the traffic they are receiving from outside of eBay.
Remember, eBay is more than just selling, it’s like any business. You must market yourself and your products if you wish to stay ahead of the competition and survive. You must set aside a marketing budget each year and that budget should be made up of pay per click ads and also include your time or your employees time for putting off eBay marketing in place. Many of those methods are free, but a person’s time still has a cost associated with it.
Good luck with your eBay selling.

eBay Search Outage hurts sellers

According to the eBay discussion board, eBay’s own search engine suffered an outage. The outage lasted a little over an hour and limited shoppers from getting any results when searching. According to eBay’s policies, they will automatically credit any fees associated with affect listings when an outage over 1 hour occurs.
Unfortunately, this has happended before not too long ago. The last glitch affected the Title and Description search as well. So what’s a seller to do?
One suggestion I continually make to my clients is to market outside of eBay. You cannot rely on eBay alone to drive traffic to you stores and this glitch shows you exactly why sellers must be proactive.
Remember, using blogs, reviews, guides and other tools that are picked up by search engines will only help you drive more qualified traffic to your listings.

eBay to Launch Feedback Revision
October 17, 2008 by admin
Filed under Latest News, eBay Policies
It’s taken some time, but eBay is finally getting ready to launch a revision to their Feedback system. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, everyone is aware of how bad the new system has hurt sellers. At first neutral feedback counted against sellers, sending thousands of PowerSellers off of the grid.
At the same time time, eBay removed the ability for sellers to leave negative feedback for buyers, again, creating a huge issue. eBay essentially penalized sellers and allowed buyers to do and say what they wanted about a buyer without any reprecussion.
Now, the new Feedback revision will allow buyers to change their Feedback Rating, comments and Detailed Seller Ratings(DSRs). The seller gets to initiate the request for the revision and buyers have the option to accept or decline the request.
What’s this mean for you as a seller? Well, you will not only have the ability to do right by the customer, but you can also set the record straight. Provide exception customer service, get feedback as to why the bad rating was left and correct it. Again, this is one of the situations where good sellers will get a huge benefit and the unsuccessful sellers will be penalized.
